Summary: Prince of Persia Returns With A Giant Leap
Comment: I have to admit when I read previews of the simply titled "Prince of Persia" and saw the screenshots I thought why mess with the look of the 3 PS2 games and do a "cell-shaded" game. After loading it up and starting it, I was amazed that they really put out a fun game. Now many complain it isn't groundbreaking or very deep (combat and story) and they would be correct. But is it fun? Yes. Is it exhilarating running along mountains and jumping from cliffs and battling enemies? Yes. Do the graphics and sound fit into the next-gen category? Yes.

The game plays out like a free-roaming game where you can decide on certain areas you can explore. There is no real order and the only catch is that the area has to be unlocked by gathering enough orbs to get a new power for your female sidekick, Elika. (It kind of resembles the relationship in Ico, as you have to have her along for the whole ride and most of the time that is a good thing as you need her powers to get you to new areas.) I liked being able to re-explore sections and it not being so linear like other games.

The graphics, particularly the backgrounds and settings, are gorgeous. The cel-shaded characters are okay, but it is kind of gimmicky. If they wanted cel-shaded, they should have rendered the entire game that way, not just the characters.

The music is moving and inspired and sound effects are dead on, particularly the sounds of the various material you are climbing or walking on.

The combat is a weak point with the game. You are immediately moved into a fixed fighting stance, which makes moving harder than necessary. Also, the combo system, while sounding great, really becomes a button masher of a game as you block with the shoulder buttons and press square, x, circle or triangle for various attacks and combos. Most fights are the same, whether minor enemies or bosses. There are some context sensitive button presses (think God of War) during boss fights, but they are easy to miss and then you pay the price. Also, good luck with getting the trophy for having less than 100 saves from Elika. Instead of dying in the game, she basically revives you or reverses time to bring you back (kind of like in the other Prince of Persia games). I literally fought every character the same way and I wished the game forced the player to be more creative.

The only other quibble I have is the jumping. Many times you are pressing the stick and button to get onto a wall and it will have you jump the other direction causing you to "die." A game that is fast-paced should be controller friendly.

Overall, it is a worthy successor in the franchise with great locations to explore, tons of trophies, an interesting chemistry and dialogue between you and Elika, and great graphics. It's far superior to Assassin's Creed and virtually glitch-free through my 12hr. playthrough. If you liked the PS2 games, you'll like this one.

Summary: PoP veterans! AVOID this monstrosity at all cost!
Comment: To put it bluntly, if you are a fan of the original PoP: Sands of Time trilogy, avoid this messy reinterpretation.

Prince of Persia for the PS3 is a contradiction on many levels. In its effort to appeal to a larger audience, it has lose it way, both in gameplay and plot. The strange thing is, its new look, that cell-shaded sheen that some may interpret as cartoonish, but to me, the look lends a surprising freshness to the game. Sadly, PoP's appeal ends there.

GAMEPLAY: Contains pointless and self-defeating mechanic. Namely the availability of a side character whose job is to prevent you from ever dying. Which is rather easy to do, this makes the platforming and combat as merely sideshows, testing your patience and irritability. There's no rolling sawblades and angled springboards to be had. The enemies can be easily dispatched via button mashing co-op with your sidekick. Again, no combo-laden killing techniques or aerial slash maneuver here. The fight is always one on one, pointless, as in fight near the edge, execute co-op combo, and canned animation ensues where the enemy falls down the edge. The four boss offers little variation. Instead, they have various states that require the corresponding button/move to break them from.

When you have cleared the level, you are made to traverse it once again to collect light spheres. Enduring the level, without any challenge whatsoever, no Dahaka to evade nor crumbling pillars to escape from. Just for the sake of racking up points to upgrade to four absurd powers. Flying;Springing from plate to plate; Dragged by a force from plate to plate; and Topsy-turvy run where you run across ceilings and the outer walls of towers. Devoid of fun, they are out of place in a persian setting.

STORY: Cheesy, stupid and simplistic. Yeah, there's this evil god who has escaped. Courtesy of your sidekick's father who wanted to revive her by cutting down a 'tree of life'. Itself a gift from the Good God who has since been long gone after giving powers to their tribe.
Up came along a thief, with flowing garbs, cheesy grin, the wiseguy attitude, the works. Looking for his lost mule, Farah. How lame is that? Is it a homage or an insult? IMO, the latter. Accidentally he met the sidekick, which goes by the name Elena. They bicker and banter and to hear more of their exchange, press L2. Which you will be prompted to do anyway.

To cut a boring story short, they begin their quest to cleanse the land (24 areas). In the end, she gave her life to resurrect the TREE. Supposed to be a climax, the developers forgot to give any heart-wrenching cutscene. No shouts of grief, no whys, and not even "noooooo". Just a stoic looking hero, carrying Elena outside. He then returns and cuts down the tree, thus, undoing your hard work and undermining the value of her life. The evil god gets out. The hero/ thief carries Elena to the desert, walking expressionless while the evil god Ahrimahn grins in the background. (Are they buddies now or what?)....

CONCLUSION: Don't buy it. Play the old Sands of Time trilogy instead. If you must risk it, just rent or borrow.

Summary: It's Fun AND Beautiful
Comment: Prince of Persia is a beautiful game and it's a lot of fun to play. The controls are simple and make all the well animated jumping and running easy to pull off. The graphics are very beautiful, almost like playing in some kind of painting.

The game is rather easy, since you can never die. If you fall or miss your jump, your partner Elika will pull you back onto solid ground. If you start to lose in a battle, she will pull you to safety, knocking the enemy back. However, the enemy will regain some of it's lost health for doing so. To me, this is a really great option. Sometimes games are just meant to be fun, and not so much to provide a hardcore challange that will only end up frustrating.

Combat is fun and smooth, with great attack animations. You can attack with your sword, you can grab an enemy, and you can let Elika attack. You can combo all sorts of beautiful moves together to make for an awesome fight scene. None of the bad guys should really give you too much trouble, especially since right before you would "die", a button will pop up and if you press it in time you avoid the "final" blow, so that way Elika doesn't have to save you and the enemy's health stays where it's at.

The environments are great to look at. The world starts off all dark and dreary with corruption, but as you heal the lands, everything becomes bright and green and lush again.

Most of the time you'll have to go through an area twice, once to get to the fertile ground so you can heal it, and then you'll probably want to go through it again after it's been healed so you can collect all the Light Seeds lying around. You collect Light Seeds in order to "buy" special powers that Elika can use for platforming, which allows you to get to new areas.

Most of these powers are pretty simple and fun, with two of them basically doing the same thing by jumping you to the next power plate. Another, and my favorite, has you running along the walls and you have to avoid running into objects. However, my least favorite, is one where you fly through the levels and you have to avoid flying into objects. Sometimes with the camera angle, it's just hard to tell whether you're supposed to go left or right to avoid a column or a wall or whatever.

The story is very entertaining. And dialogue between the Prince and Elika is really top notch. Not only is the voice acting well done, but the script was excellent too. It's always fun to hear what the Prince and Elika will say to each other next.

I know a lot of people complain that the game is too easy, but like I said earlier, sometimes games are just meant to be FUN, not challanging. I'm certaintly not going to hold it against this great game for being too easy. It just made it more fun to not have to go into a menu and load a save game because you missed a jump or because you got killed by an enemy.

Prince of Persia is one of the best looking games and really shouldn't be missed.

Summary: Almost impeccable
Comment: The new Prince of Persia arrives for the next-gen consoles in an almost impeccable release.

In my opinion, the team from Ubisoft made the right move when deciding to give the series a fresh start; this is a new story for a new prince. The plot however is in the same grounds as the ones for the previous works, there's a demon that has been set loose and the prince gets involved and has to help Elika to put him back to rest. The story, as it unfolds with Elika's flashbacks, only gets more interesting as you advance in the game, as usual with the PoP games, expect an epic story with twists and a surprising ending. I am already looking forward for the sequel!

The graphics are stunning; actually all the cinema displays were made using the in game graphics, which gives you an idea of the quality of them. The "artistic style" Ubisoft developed is beautiful, every scene of the game looks as if you were watching the artistic concepts for the game. Playability is also great, if you've played Ninja Gaiden Sigma, well the acrobatics that were added to the prince made me feel like controlling Ryu Hayabusa, which is definitely a good thing. While I had my doubts about the Elika character I ended up liking her a lot, she is indeed a great addition to the saga and the playability of the game, many of the new challenges in this game come from using her ability to control the color plates and combining them to reach further levels, the fact that you can talk to her at any time during the game is also great; you can learn from her, from the story or even joke around. She is definitely one of the best A.I. characters I've seen in a video game. On the other hand, as much as I fell in love with Elika, the fact that she helps you so you cannot die takes away some of the difficulty in the game, to give you a better idea, think of Elika as the dagger of time on steroids... you actually cannot die during the game.

The boss battles are just as promised, you don't fight groups of enemies but fight them on a one by one basis, the cinemas and action during the fights are incredible, even though you have to face the same enemy in their lairs several times, each fight is unique and the difficulty level and their abilities increase every time.

Replay Value?

Unless you are the kind of gamer who likes to collect all the trophies you can get on a game, there is little replay value. During the game you have to collect `light seeds', there is a total of 1001 so there's a challenge. Important to note that if you complete the game and start a new one you start from scratch, `light seeds' from a completed game do not carry into a new one.

Finishing the game unlocks an extra skin for Elika. The limited edition also allows you to unblock 2 more skins from the "Sands of time" game; though this is not exclusive to the limited edition as the codes are already on the web and can be used on any copy.

Limited Edition

On a side note, I preordered the game and got the so called `limited edition' which is basically the regular game in a carton box with a different cover that includes a BD with an 11 minute documentary on the making of the game (you read correctly, 11 min.) The hint and art books included are digital and have to be viewed as a BD; the same goes for the soundtrack, which is pretty lame as if you want to listen to it you have to stare at a screen cap on screen while the music plays. I expected a separate CD with the soundtrack so this was a little bit disappointing.

Summary: beautiful graphics but boring gameplay
Comment: The graphics where outstanding. This game is great for a child or beginner - there is no skill needed - Elika will save you everytime. Battles - boring. There is very little action in this game. A few bosses that you fight using 3 moves. I enjoyed the game to begin with but got bored after I realized that it wasn't getting any better. It is very repetative. It is a game that I will play once and it will sit on the shelf.
If you have played previous prince of persia games then you should know it is different. Much less combative action. Just runnning and jumping.
