The first Motorstorm wowed fans with its heady formula of brutal, unpredictable off-road racing, festival vibes and stunning Monument Valley desert scenery. Now, Motorstorm Pacific Rift takes you to a solitary tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean, ready for a whole new take on no-holds-barred racing action through thick swamps, dense jungle, towering peaks and steaming volcanoes. Unleash the storm again | Happy landings in the air zone. View larger. | 4-player split screen. View larger. | The new Monster Truck class. View larger. | Light up in the fire zone. View larger. | Not just pretty backdrops to the action, these environments take center stage in challenging players with everything in Mother Nature's arsenal. Thick mud, tangled undergrowth, swift flowing rivers, choking volcanic clouds and searing lava pools all test the drivers to their limits and beyond. Expect a rich festival of off road racing, along with a host of game modes and rewards. It's brutal, dangerous, relentless, and unpredictable and more than a game - Motorstorm Pacific Rift is a way of life. Even More Vehicle Classes and Tracks Pacific Rift ships with eight car classes: the seven from the original game (Bikes, ATVs, Buggies, Rally Cars, Racing trucks, Mud Pluggers and Big Rigs) all reproduced in new forms, as well as the new Monster Truck class. Big, but not as big or powerful as a Big Rig, Monster Trucks are surprisingly fast for their size and are able to roll over most other classes of vehicle and virtually any vegetation they encounter. The game's list of playable tracks has also been doubled to 16 and are categorized along the lines of the elements and the different environmental zones are found on the island. These zones are: - The Air Zone - Tracks high up in the mountain and featuring lots of big jumps.
- The Fire Zone - Track oozing with new land and pools of lava that come from the island's resident volcano.
- The Water Zone - Here players will find courses laid out along the the beaches and other water sources of the island.
- The Earth Zone - The typical rough, rocky mud-filled off-road courses similar to the tracks found in the original game.
Multiplayer Modes In addition to the wild, anything goes singleplayer festival mode players of the originalMotorstorm game will remember and relish, Motorstorm Pacific Rift also provides addictive multiplayer modes for both online and local play. These include the same rampaging, music injected, 12-player online support as the first game, as well as multiplayer options for local action up to four players. Play in local multiplayer modes are further enhanced by new four-player split screen functionality that when used in conjunction with the game's 720p HD video output ensures clarity no matter how fast racers are moving or how much mud they are throwing up. Key Game Features: - The Island - A brand new radically different location for the festival.
- Unpredictable Events - Never the same race twice. Events will take place to change the race on a lap to lap basis.
- Split Screen Play - Play with up to 3 buddies on the same screen.
- The Monster Truck - An all new vehicle class added to the core vehicle selection for a total of 8 different vehicle classes.
- Immersive Online Experience - A radical re-look at the whole Motorstorm online experience, focusing on ease of use and breadth of gameplay all while tearing it up in races up to 12 players.
- Improved Actions - A new level of control; punch, duck and ram using a new control layout.
- Free-play - Race how you want by creating your own race tickets.
- Photo Mode - Snap your greatest victory or your most visceral crashes and share them with the world.
- New Rating System - It's not all about winning; it's also about how you perform.
Bells and Whistles: Tunes and XMB Functionality As was the case with the original Motorstorm, the driving experience in Pacific Rift can not be separated from the music that accompanies it. The game comes with a thumping 40 song soundtrack and players will also have the ability to pipe in their own playlists saved to their PS3 the ability to access others saved on your PS3's Hard drive. In addition for players who want to relive their moments tearing across the island, the game also features PlayStation 3 XrossMediaBar (XMB) functionality and Photo Mode. XMB lets plays create movies of their races and access them from the PS3's main menu, while Photo Mode allows you to take snapshots while within a race. As you roll into the Rift, expect a rich festival of off road racing, along with a host of game modes and rewards. It's brutal, dangerous, relentless, unpredictable and much more than a game - Motorstorm Pacific Rift is a way of life.

Customer Rating: Summary: Much better than the first! Comment: Although I loved the first Motorstorm, this one takes it to a whole different level with outstanding graphics and tracks to race on. Everything just seems more fun than the first in general. If you did not like the first one, then you should rent this, but if you liked/loved the first one then you will no doubt love this one.
Customer Rating: Summary: Really Fun Comment: Motorstorm is a game that is just totally about fun. There is a little bit of depth with the different types of tracks and terrain but mostly I believe this is the most fun you can have with a racing game. The collisions are awesome and they never get old, or at least haven't yet for me and the game looks really good graphically.
The only con I have is that on my HDTV in horizontal split screen mode I get 2 black bars on the left and right side and the picture doesn't take up the whole screen. I don't have this problem in vertical split screen however.
Customer Rating: Summary: Be careful....a storm is brewing Comment: This game is amazing. The graphics totally blew me away on this. Usually racing games like this have just mediocre graphics and audio, but not this. The game itself is so life like. If you drive through water, it cools down your engine. The game has a lot of vegetation, which sway in the wind or crush when you drive over them. I play with the Monster Truck, or the Buggy and nothing else. The truck plows over smaller cars, and is great on terrain, especially on online play. I would rate the online play 5/5. You can choose a casual game or ranked game or play with friends. The ranked is obviously more competitive, but that makes it more fun. You have to decide the best route, and be wary of everyone around you. Like myself in the Monster Truck, I run over smaller cars and especially motorbikes and ATVs. You have a boost in the game, like the original which is really nice. I use the boost as a stabilizer sometimes, which I would suggest to everyone, especially on online play. If you are spinning or sliding you can use it to help set yourself straight and not get plowed over.
Overall I rate this game 5/5. I would suggest renting before buying, because not everyone is into intense racing games like this. I suggest the online play for everyone to try at least once in a ranked and casual game. The online play is a feature that really pushes it into a buy category.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Improvment from the First and IN GAME MUSIC!!! Comment: I had purchased the first Motorstorm when it came out and i was pretty satisfied with the gameplay and stunned by the graphics, the only complaints i had were that there wasn't a large soundtrack, no split-screen, and the story mode was pretty brief. With Motorstorm Pacific Rift, all these problems were greatly fixed along with some awesome new features. There are a bunch of levels on the story mode to keep you busy, plus the replayabilty isn't to shabby. The added bonus of 4-player split-screen is pretty sweet. The graphics aren't worse when playing with more people, you still will have your eyes wide-open, gazing at the beauty that is Motorstorm Pacific Rift. As a ps3 owner who actually purchased his ps3 during its first week, i know some of the minor things that we have longed to have. When 2.4 came out with trophies it was pretty sweet, and when in game xmb was released, i was happy. but one feature has yet to make itself known on the ps3, playing your own music during gameplay. Apart from an okay soundtrack, Pacific Rift, gives us this blessing. I won't have to listen to the 45 or 50 songs that are on the game, i can listen to whatever's on my hdd. There's nothing like playing splitscreen with 3 friends, all as bikes, while versing 15 monster trucks, oh and listening to "Oh Fortuna." IN GAME MUSIC IS THE S*** AND SO IS MOTORSTORM PACIFIC RIFT. A GREAT BUY.
Customer Rating: Summary: Massive Improvement Comment: When I originally bought the first Motorstorm, it was simply to supply me with one of my first PS3 games. Back then I thought it was amazing as it was my first taste of the PS3s possible processing power, however, I was wrong. Pretty as it looked, like most beautiful people in the world, they tend to lack any sort of substance or personality that makes you want more and after a few races, I was left wanting a change of scenery. Apart from the beautiful surroundings and realistic driving tracks and environment interraction, there simply wasn't much to this game to keep me playing or want to download its further content. One thing I will say about the first game to sum it up for you is, the light's on, the pretty lady's looking at herself in the mirror, but there's nothing going on upstairs.
Going from that I can tell you about my experience with the sequel, and let me tell you it's a very, very good one. It's a rarity of today, but Pacific Rift is the pretty lady once again, yet she's gone back to school and gotten herself an education, and now she has much more to keep me amused than just a pretty face. There's so much more to Pacific Rift I don't know where to begin or how to approach my beginning. I can only really split this review into three informative parts that give you an all round view of the game and what it has to offer.
The Gameplay: One thing that I really hated about the original Motorstorm is the overall controls and racing aspects. The controls were stiff and at times I felt myself really forcing the controller button down to turn a corner as my vehicle wouldn't seem to react. I understand that different vehicles handle differently in alternate terrains, but the way the original handled was simply ridiculous. This has been totally revamped for the new installment and now the vehicle controls seem a lot more responsive, even with the different terrain handlings.
The Effects: Well what can I say about the effects? The only thing I can really say is they're just as good, if not better than the first. That pretty idiot you once knew hasn't only gone back to school, but she's also gotten herself a face lift. She's prettier, easier and more enjoyable to play with as a whole which makes me want more and more. I'll admit that when playing the game, I'll have about 2 races and turn it off, but I'll always go back as I can't get enough. The Island terrain presents beautiful beaches, detailed jungles and frighteningly aggressive volcanic areas but you need to watch that you don't fall in. The interraction of your vehicles with the terrain is also something brilliant and must be witnessed. Depending on the size of your vehicle will depend on how you interract with the plants and other such jungle items. Say if you're in a Monster Truck, you can plow through the larger bushes and even knock down some trees to make your way to the finish. However, if you're on an ATV and you drive into the same bush plowed by a monster truck, you're going to find yourself in the water.
The Features: The different vehicles are aplenty in this installment as it contains all 7 original vehicle classes along with a new class of monster trucks. Now, one thing I need to tell you is that although this essentially contains 8 vehicle classes it basically contains just 8 vehicles. The only difference between your monster truck and the guys you're playing against is the look of them. You can choose what your vehicle looks like on the outside, but depending on its class, they're all the same underneath. I suppose to some this could present a more challenging experience when in a race featuring all of the same vehicle, yet I would have appreciated if you had ATVs with different handling specs. Say if they had different companies developing different ATVs which could have allowed for a performance tune up feature.
This also contains the classic festival where you engage in a number of different races with different challenges, such as wreck limits or completion times. There doesn't seem to be that many tracks which is a little disappointing, however the detail in the tracks is immense and something that makes the game worth it in of itself. The trophies system recently implemented through the PSN allows for a higher replay value as you want to achieve all trophies to obtain the coveted platinum trophy.
This is a wonderful game which everyone will enjoy. It's likely that if you liked the first, you will like the sequel and it's also likely that if you didn't like the original, you will still like this installment. Buy it or rent it, either way you must have this game.
