Summary: The Hori EX2 is a great fighting stick.
Comment: I've been playing fighting games for 15 years now, and when I couldn't stand the 360 dpad anymore a few days after buying HD Remix on my 360, I went and bought my Hori EX2. I have played with various joysticks on the Playstation and Dreamcast in the past, as well as occasionally in the arcades, so I believe I at least have some idea of what a stick should be like :D

I thought it would take me a decent amount of time to get used to playing with this fighting stick, since I have not regularly used a joystick for fighting games in about 8 years, but I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was for me to do my moves again. Dragon punches, fireballs, hurricane kicks, etc, all work perfectly while I played Street Fighter HD Remix. It only took me a day or so to get used to using the stick. I tested this game out with Dead or Alive 4 and it also worked fine.

Many people here criticize the 4-corner square "gate" on the joystick, but it is strictly a matter of preference. In contrast, I was never good at performing moves with the 8-corner octagonal gate. Additionally, the ball on the joystick is again, also a matter of preference, and the buttons are as responsive as can be. I do not have any trouble performing quarter-circle motions or diagonal motions with this stick, as some other reviewers have noted. Ultimately, I believe any stick, if it is your first stick, will give you trouble regardless and that it takes a decent amount of practice to get proficient at using a fighting stick.

I have not played any other fighting games with this stick aside from Dead or Alive 4 and Street Fighter HD Remix, but I can honestly say that I did not regret purchasing the Hori EX2 and that for the price, it is an excellent fighting stick. There may be better sticks out there, but I am definitely not going to shell out almost $200 for the Street Fighter IV stick when it comes out in February.

Summary: Mediocre stick at best
Comment: Merely an average fighting stick for a seasoned fighting game player but decent intro stick for the cost.

My biggest complaints are:

the gate is 4 way: this means the stick "locks" in at the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right. Makes quarter circle forward movements VERY difficult. I imagine this is better for 3D fighting movement but it's tough to pull off moves in 2D. This problem is easily remedied by obtaining cheap 8 way gate replacement part from Lizard Lick and a little basic drilling. If you're not going to mod it, be wary.

the buttons are mushy: they don't feel very responsive, nor do they hold up over time.

I would wait for the MadCatz (trust me! I know it sounds silly, but trust me on this) Street Fighter IV sticks. The one that costs $80 will likely be better than this, and the one that costs $150 will blow it out of the water as it is an exact replication of the SFIV arcade cabinet set up.

Summary: Not an ideal joystick
Comment: The EX2, when I got it, was the only stick for the 360. The stick, though, shows very little thought in its design. First, the stick's buttons are oddly placed. On the top row, we have B, X, and Y. On the bottom, A, LT, and RT. The bumpers are on the top where you can't really use them.

This means that in every game, you must remap the controls; there are no sensible defaults for it. In some games, the stick is completely useless. In Ultimate MK3 on the Xbox Live Arcade, Midway didn't include the option to remap the controls. That leaves the stick completely unusable for the game. Not to pick on Midway, but in MKvDC, the game uses all the buttons. What do you do when two are at the top of your controller and unusable? Well, you have to pick which two your game style simply won't use.

Hori, by producing this idiosyncratic button layout, has forced gamers to play their games below par, and with some games, not to play them at all. I can think of no good reason to do this with a joystick. That fact alone drops the review of the stick a star.

Then we have the problem that very quickly the stick starts misdetecting your movements. I can't reliably execute my moves on SF2, either the Hyper Fighting I had when I first bought it or the HDRemix that's recently come out. When I use my X-Arcade stick, though, I can execute them right. When I check the feedback in a training mode, I can see that it isn't detecting my diagonals very well. That would be good for Pac-Man, but not for a fighting game (and that is what these sticks are for).

Within a few days the stickers also started to come off of the product. This is an aesthetic thing, so it normally wouldn't bother me, but coupled with the preceding, it makes me wonder if Hori really values their customers.

I've had this stick for several months now, so I have a good feel for its strengths and weaknesses. However, I am going to buy the SF2 Tournament Stick when it's released. I'm really not in the mood for another Hori stick. In the interim, I'll suffer with it and play on my Xbox, Dreamcast, and emulators with my X-Arcade stick. It's too bad they can't make a 360 adapter.

Summary: Awesome
Comment: Great fighting stick for Super Street Fighter HD remix. I just love the stick and would recommend it to everyone!!! Good to have for Street Fighter 4 around the corner.
